I Love Food, So I Just Can't Lose Weight

Not long ago I had a client that just couldn't stop over eating because she said she just loved food.

My question for her was if she loved food so much, how come she didn't act like she did?

Of course she came back with a huh?

A person that truly loves food, will eat food slowly.  They will savour each and every bite, they will notice all the flavours in each bite.  Imagine if you were a wine connoisseur  you wouldn't just down the glass of wine in one shot.  You would smell it, you would take a sip and hold it in your mouth and let the flavours roll around your tongue.  This is similar to what a person who truly loves food would act like.

So next time you think you are loving a particular food, pretend you are a food connoisseur, and take your time.
Look at the food, smell the food, have small bites, really taste the food, notice how many flavours you can notice.

Now that is love of food!

Ask the Weight Loss Coach

When I'm out and about, I get people who ask me questions about weight loss without dieting.  I am sure if one person is asking, then there must be more who are interested in that answer as well.

SO, I'm asking YOU - Yes you, to ask me a question by emailing me at info@attunedws.com - for the subject line put:  Ask the Coach.
I will be posting the answers on my e-newsletter and this blog.
Feel free to ask questions about weight loss, nutrition, or mindset to weight loss.

I would be happy to answer them for you!

One thing I would like people who are looking to lose weight to keep in mind.....  A quick fix is not always a permanent fix.  I work with my weight loss clients in a step by step manner that moves them in a comfortable way to get from where they are to where they want to go.   That means no food deprivation and still get to enjoy foods they love.

Do you have troubles going to sleep?

Not long ago a friend of mine was mentioning that she was having difficulty going to sleep at night.  So I asked her what does she do when she can’t go to sleep.  Her answer was watch TV until she is tired, which ends up being around 2:00am, and then she is tired the next day.

A little back ground information, this friend of mine is female and around 60 years of age.  Often women around this age do have troubles sleeping because of hormonal issues.  But in this case my friend is not suffering any other symptoms of hormonal imbalances, so I am chalking it up to something that almost all mothers who read how to raise a baby books know.  Stimulation before bedtime is not going to help your baby go to sleep.  Here I the thing…. This same advice applies for adults too.  Watching TV, playing video games, texting on your phone are all activities that stimulate the nervous system and make it hard to go to sleep.

So I suggested to my friend to try reading at least 30 minutes before bedtime, or listening to music, or some other activity other than something involving electronics or video for a minimum of 1 week.
Results:  She had troubles for the first two days, because it was out of her routine to not be watching TV before bedtime, so she struggled with that a bit.  But after that she started to sleep like a baby.  Every so often now she still has a night or two where she has troubles going to sleep, but most nights she does not have difficulty any longer.

Do you have troubles going to sleep at night?  It could be just as simple as turning off the electronics and stimulating activities… just as you would for a baby.

Do you Oil Pull?

Ok, for starters, what is oil pulling?  It is the latest health trend where you swish oil around in your mouth and then spit it out.   No not car oil!

Here is my story.  I read about oil pulling a while ago and about all the good health and dental benefits from this practice.  Now to back track a little, my husband was changing jobs, which meant we had no dental benefits at all for the next while.  I usually go to get my teeth cleaned at the dentist every 6 months as I get a large amount of tarter built up and my teeth start to yellow in that time.  So of course I’m starting to panic about how horrible my dental cleaning is going to be if I don’t go for a full year.   So I decided to give oil pulling a try.

What I did is use light virgin olive oil.  Some people use coconut oil, but that just wasn’t very palatable for me at all.   So I put about a teaspoon of olive oil in my mouth and started to swish it around my teeth.  The first time I just about gagged, having a thick oil in your mouth is not the greatest to start with.  I did get used to it and it does not bother me at all now.   I’d swish for about 4 minutes (I did this while I was putting my contacts in my eyes).  Then I’d spit it out.  I now spit in to a facial tissue and toss in the garbage, but when I first started I spit it out into the sink (kind of made a mess).  Then I would floss my teeth and brush my teeth like normal.  I only do the oil pulling once per day.

Well the results are:  After going twice as long as I ever have gone between dental cleanings, I have had the best checkup ever!  And hardly any plaque buildup on my teeth.  Not to mention my teeth were whiter.

So bottom line is this is now a practice I have incorporated into my daily routine, and I recommend you try it as well.  Your mouth and teeth will love you for it.

Group Weight Loss Coaching or One-to-one Weight Loss Coaching

Weight Loss is a big industry and Weight Loss Coaches are in high demand.  But what kind of Coaching is best for you?

I know from my own personal experience, some of the Big Name weight loss centers so called 'Coaches' are not that terrific.  I have personally been told by a so called 'Coach' that I had signed a contract saying I would stick to their program!  This was because I refused to measure my lettuce that I was using in my salads.  Let me just say, the incentive to continue with them, was not there.  I felt belittled and in my thinking... eating a lot of lettuce certainly did not make me fat.

But I digress, back to Groups or One-to-one weight loss coaching.

I first of all recommend, hiring an Independent Weight Loss Coach.  These Independent Coaches are generally more understanding of your struggles and are not limited to the Company 'program', so are more able to work with you effectively in the way you as an individual may need.

Cost is a big difference between Group Weight Loss Coaching and One-to-one Weight Loss Coaching.  Often Independent Weight Loss Coaches use the same overall outline for their programs for either Group or One-to-one, but as a Group they can charge less because the Coach is committing less of their own time.  The down-fall of Group Weight Loss Coaching is customization.  With Groups it is not as easy to accommodate everyone's individual needs, which is another reason why the cost is lower with Group Weight Loss Coaching.   With One-to-one Weight Loss Coaching, the Coach works very close with the client and the program is individually tailored to the individual needs of that client.... but that is where the cost goes up.

Last thing to consider is confidentiality.  There are those who do not want to share anything (and sometimes personal stuff does come up) in a Group Setting.  If you do not want to share anything, then One-to-one Weight Loss Coaching may be the best solution for you.

So over all;  Group Weight Loss Coaching is much less cost, but possibly less effective, as well as you are sharing with a Group.  One-to-one Weight Loss Coaching may be more effective, but the cost is much higher, and anything you share is strictly between you and the Coach.

So what type of Weight Loss Coaching appeals to you most (Group or One-to-one)?  I would love to know.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as L-ascorbic acid, is an important vitamin for your body.  Unfortunately the body is not able to create vitamin C on its own, so we need to supplement through food or vitamin supplements to get vitamin C into our body.

What Does Vitamin C do for you?
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means it may help prevent certain cancers.
Vitamin C is needed for your body to absorb iron properly, especially non-heme iron.  Non-heme iron is our iron intake through vegetables.
Vitamin C is needed for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body
Vitamin C supplements when taken regularly might have slightly shorter colds or somewhat milder symptoms.

Too little vitamin C can lead to signs and symptoms of deficiency, including:
·         Anemia
·         Bleeding gums
·         Decreased ability to fight infection
·         Decreased wound-healing rate
·         Dry and splitting hair
·         Easy bruising
·         Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)
·         Nosebleeds
·         Possible weight gain because of slowed metabolism
·         Rough, dry, scaly skin
·         Swollen and painful joints
·         Weakened tooth enamel

Food Sources of Vitamin C

Fruits with the highest sources of vitamin C include:
·         Cantaloupe
·         Citrus fruits and juices, such as orange and grapefruit
·         Kiwi fruit
·         Mango
·         Papaya
·         Pineapple
·         Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries
·         Watermelon

Vegetables with the highest sources of vitamin C include:
·         Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower
·         Green and red peppers
·         Spinach, cabbage, turnip greens, and other leafy greens
·         Sweet and white potatoes
·         Tomatoes and tomato juice
·         Winter squash

I usually recommend clients to take 250mg of Vitamin C with Each meal and 250mg at bedtime (that totals 1000mg per day).
Of course, always consult your medical professional before you make any dietary or lifestyle changes.

The good, bad and ugly about sulphites and your health

I'm going to cheat a little here today instead of me re-wording and typing I'm just going to put a link.
This is a little guide put out by the Government of Canada (yes I'm from Canada) that discusses Sulphites as one of the top 10 allergens.

Here is the link:

What the diet experts don’t tell you about iron and thyroid

When I was a kid, my iron levels were very low and I was considered anemic.  My mom fed me cod liver oil, and back then it was in a liquid form, and tasted disgusting.  She tried to get me to eat liver, but everyone has their limits.  I used to regularly have to get blood tests to have my iron levels checked.  So frequent in fact that getting blood taken and needles have become no big deal.  As I got a little older, my iron levels seemed to have straightened out.   My mom stopped force feeding me cod liver oil; she stopped pushing the liver and all seemed to be well.   I never thought about liver and cod liver oil again.
That is until recently.  As many of us do as we get older (for me mid 20’s) you begin to get the idea that you may be fat.  You start dieting, and start following all sorts of skinny guru’s you tell you to eat like a rabbit.  You start to follow all sorts of restrictive diets.  This all starts off fine, you lose the weight, and it all seems good.  Plus we all know we should be eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat – right?
Well maybe think again.
A few symptoms of iron deficiency:

Feeling tired and weak
Decreased cognitive performance and ability
Difficulty maintaining body temperature (do you always feel cold)
Decreased immune function

But it does not stop there.  If your iron levels are low… this also greatly affects your thyroid.  For those who are a little bit older…. Do you have the above symptoms and thyroid deficiency as well?
A few symptoms of a sluggish functioning thyroid:

Difficulty losing weight, or even weight gain
Difficulty maintaining body temperature
Dry skin
Slowed heart rate
Memory does not work as good
Feeling tired and weak
Muscle weakness
Thinner hair
Heavier than normal or irregular menstrual periods
Elevated blood cholesterol level

This you could be suffering from because you are following those crazy diets.   Or if you have been suffering from the above symptoms and don’t know why, you may want to check your iron and thyroid levels.  I won’t go into how you can downward spiral from the symptoms listed above and how things can get worse from there.  I want to focus on what you can do to reverse those symptoms.
You need to eat more meat – red meat.  Now I know this is controversial.  But quickest way to turn this all around is to get more iron intake.  And by the way I don’t suggest iron supplements, because those are very hard on your liver.  We want a highly functioning body with as few drugs as possible that could be interfering with other functioning parts of our body.   I suggest finding organic grass fed beef if possible.   You may have to do a little searching.
But here is why I suggest beef – it has more iron that is absorbable that iron in other sources.
There is heme Iron and non-heme iron.  Heme iron is more absorbable by the body and sources of heme iron are animal meat and fish.  By the way red meat is higher in iron that white meat.  Non-heme iron sources are from breads, grains, vegetables.  The body absorbs up to 35 percent of the iron from animal sources and as little as 2 percent from plant sources.
Now I’m not saying to go crazy and consume meat like crazy, but if you are on a meat reduced eating plan, you may want to re-look at increasing your meat intake a little.
Now if you are a vegetarian and have not researched your foods well, it is very likely your iron levels are low.   You may notice dark circles under your eyes – or others may have noticed them.  That is a very good sign that your iron levels may be low.  But there is hope for those who don’t eat meat as well.  You can increase the iron absorption in vegetable by increasing your vitamin C intake along with those meals.
So to sum up, don’t just blindly follow any diet or eating plan that comes along.   We have so many ‘guru’s’ saying eat this, don’t eat that.  The bottom line is you have a unique body that is an individual and different from everyone else.  What may be working for one person, may not work for you.  You need to do research on dietary changes, to make sure that those changes are in your body’s best interest.

Now go…… look at those symptoms – do you need to increase your iron levels… I know I do.

My Review of Bullet Proof Coffee

This is my person review and experience of trying Bullet Proof Coffee created by Dave Asprey.

Admittedly I am addicted to Coffee, but I find that after a few cups I get the jitters and I notice that I become short tempered.

I have been wanting  to cut down on my coffee consumption, but just have not been able to.
I read all the great benefits about it, including possible weight loss – which being a Wellness and Weight Loss Coach, certainly sparked my interest.

Here is what I found… and I just want to point out the results may be different for you, as each body is as unique as your finger print.  So if you want, I encourage you to try out Bullet Proof Coffee for yourself and see what your results are.

If you are unfamiliar with Bullet Proof Coffee you can Google it and find more detailed info, but the very basics are;  It is upgraded Coffee and you add Grass fed unsalted butter and their Brain Octane – which is basically a fat that is 18X more powerful than coconut oil.   It is supposed to increase brain function, and I’ve ready many testimonials that people have lost weight drinking this interesting blend to their Bullet proof coffee.

Well, my results are in.  After trying it out for 1 month, I did not notice any more clarity in my brain function.  I also did not lose any weight.  But on the positive side, as crazy as it sounds putting butter in your coffee (instead of cream and sugar) it tastes great!   I actually love it.  It has a nice creamy smooth taste.   The other bonus I gained, is it has curbed my coffee addiction.  I don’t want to drink any other coffee than my bullet proof coffee.   So I have my one cup of coffee in the morning, and I am satisfied for the day, and don’t even desire to have any more coffee during the day.   What I like is the reduced amount of sugar I am now consuming because I don’t have regular coffee with cream and sugar.

So there you have it folks.  That is my results and my thoughts on Bullet Proof Coffee.

One last thing I want to point out is that I do not receive any compensation for anyone who decides to try and purchase Bullet Proof Coffee .   So you can rest assured the above is my honest opinion.

Self Hypnosis - what you don't understand

I like many people, did not really understand how hypnosis or self-hypnosis really worked.  That was before I become a certified hypnotist.
Many people have the belief that you listen to a hypnosis or self-hypnosis recording and it should change your life right away.   That simply does not happen.

Hypnosis or Self-hypnosis is the process of changing your subconscious thoughts – or negative self-talk.   And how these negative self-talk or subconscious thoughts came to be in the first place is out of habit.
It is proven that to break a habit – or to start a new habit it takes 21 – 27 days of continuous practice.  Therefore to change the habit of your subconscious thought patterns listening to hypnosis or self-hypnosis takes about the same about of time.

So that is something to keep in mind when you are considering hypnosis or self-hypnosis.   Don’t be fooled to think it works overnight.  It takes practice ---- just like everything else in life.

Law of Attraction and Thoughts Create Your Reality

If you are learning about the Law of Attraction you have probably heard that your thoughts create your reality.

But what does that really mean??   It is not explained very clearly.  Here is how I would explain it:

There is a Situation (being I'm a Weight Loss Coach) we will use a weight loss scenario.
You are over weight.

Then you have a Thought about the Situation
"I am a fat cow.  I have no will power to lose the weight"

Then you have a Feeling about what you are thinking.
You feel bad or worthless.  You don't like yourself.

Then that Feeling causes an Action
You eat a pint of ice cream.

Now Lets break this down.
The Situation is a fact can't change it in that moment.
Fact:  You are over weight.

Here is where you can change everything!!!   You can choose what you want your thought to be about it.
Instead of thinking I am a fat cow.   Choose to think, I am working on getting my weight under control.

Once you change your thought or thinking, it chances everything else down the line.

So if we re-list our scenerio with the new thought this is how it may play out:

The is a Situation
You are over weight.

Your Thought about the Situation
I am working on getting my weight under control.

Your Feeling about that thought
Hopeful

The Action caused from the Feeling
Managing your eating plan

So can you see how your thoughts create your reality??   It is from the Thought you have about any situation, that snowballs and changes everything down the line.

I hope this explanation has been helpful.
