If you are trying to lose weight, I bet you know a lot about what you should and should not eat. You may know the calorie content of all sorts of foods. You know what foods are good for you and what foods are bad for you. Most people I come across that are trying to lose weight know almost more than I do about nutrition - and I'm a Certified Holistic Nutritionist.
BUT, how are your weight loss efforts going?
Yes I'm a Holistic Nutritionist, but I am also a Certified Weight Loss Coach.... and here is what I know.
It does not matter how much you know about nutrition, if you are over eating or emotionally eating, you are not going to lose the weight. If you are not eating because you are physically hungry, then food is not going to solve your problem.
How many diets have you tried? A standard question I ask my clients is how successful have they been on the previous diets they have tried. I usually get an answer similar to; I did very well on (whatever diet they did), but since I went off the diet I gained the weight back.
See the problem here? The key phrase is: since I went off the diet I gained weight back. The part they leave out is they usually gain back more weight than they originally lost. So in essence they have gone backwards in their weight loss efforts.
Diets are just not sustainable. That is the bottom line and this is why diets have a 98% long term failure rate. 98% failure rate but yet people keep dieting. There is a quote by Albert Einstein that says, "Insanity is going the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Dieting is insanity, plain and simple.
So I say, stop being insane! I teach people how to lose weight without dieting. Sounds good doesn't it? But why do people not jump on board and learn how to lose weight without dieting? Funny thing about human behavior is that humans will work really hard to keep up with what they are familiar with (no matter how bad it is), but will only put in half as much effort to change a practiced habit. This habit in our case is over eating.
Everyone is looking for the quick fix. Many say give me the 10 day diet that promises me to lose 30 lbs. But at what cost? This kind of extreme dieting and weight regain, mess up our metabolism, and leads us well down the path to obesity. So is the quick fix, what you really want?
I suggest taking the path less followed. Yes it will take you a little longer, but while others are dieting and sliding back to even more weight gain, you will slowly plod ahead learning how to not overeat and still be happy that you get to eat foods you love. In 5 years time, you will be 30 lbs lighter, and your quick fix friends will likely be 30 lbs heavier than they are now.
How do you really want to lose weight? Yes it is hard work creating a new habit. But is it worth it to you?
